Q.  What is GPS?

A.  GPS means Global Positioning System. This is a navigational system involving satellites and computers that can determine the latitude and longitude of a receiver on Earth by computing the time difference for signals from different satellites to reach the receiver.

Q.  How do GPS devices work?

A. Our GPS devices use the Globalstar satellite network to transmit a position on a regular basis. They work across the globe, from oceans to the poles. These positions can be received within seconds, no matter where you are.

Q.  Do they really work anywhere on Earth?

A.  Yes.  As long as you have a good view of the sky, our GPS devices will be able to transmit a position report from anywhere.

Q.  How do we see where the GPS devices are?

A. By using the Trackplot Portal.  This is an all encompassing, all inclusive advanced web based mapping solution which, when integrated with your GPS devices, enables you to ensure your staff are safe and assets are secure at all times, 24/7.

Q.  How accurate is GPS tracking?

A.  GPS tracking is very accurate and usually reports the position of a person or asset within a few metres. On occasion it can be anything up to 100 metres depending on GPS coverage in your area.

Q.  Do you provide charitable discounts?

We have helped numerous charities to implement their health and safety policies and monitor their progress during expeditions.  We are unable to offer discounts but we like to help if we can.  Get in touch to tell us what you have in mind.

2. Lone Worker FAQs

Q:  What is a lone worker?

A:  According to the Health and Safety Executive the definition of  Lone Workers are ‘those who work by themselves without close or direct supervision.’

Lone workers can be found in a wide range of industries and situations, some examples being:

  • Self Employed people, working from home
  • Sales Representatives travelling to various locations
  • Housing Officers, making home visits alone
  • District Nurses, making home visits alone
  • Community Workers
  • Drivers
  • Engineers
  • Postal Workers
  • NHS and Medical workers
  • Social Workers
  • Estate Agents

Q. Why do I need to monitor my lone workers and ensure their safety?

A.  The expanding volume of HSE regulations and the increasing number of HSE prosecutions make staff safety issues a priority for any business, particularly those with lone workers.

For many reasons including Health & Safety regulations, to bring more efficient working and to avoid vicarious liability.

Health and safety

As an employer you have a duty of care to your employees under Health & Safety legislation to ensure that any employees working on their own, outside the office, are safe. Particularly businesses with lone workers in:

  • remote or inhospitable locations with no mobile phone reception or
  • vulnerable roles which carry a higher risk of abuse or attack, especially those having social contact with the general public

Efficient working

Budget constraints have forced lone working when previously buddies or teams would have been the norm.  Trackplot can bring efficiencies to ensure you can work within your budget constraints.

Vicarious liability

Under civil law, employers are vicariously liable for negligent acts or omissions by their employees in the course of their employment, even if they are working in a way that is expressly forbidden.

In addition, vicarious liability has now been extended to a new criminal law under the Wildlife and Natural Environment (Scotland) Act 2011.  Latest reforms to modernise the management of wildlife in Scotland came into force on 1 January 2012.  This new law is of particular importance to land owners and managers operating within the game and shooting business.

The second commencement order of the Wildlife and Natural Environment (Scotland) Act 2011 introduces a new offence of vicarious liability in relation to the persecution of wild birds. The legislation also includes measures for a new hare close season, changes to the deer act and snaring law.

What this means in practice is the employer is responsible for certain crimes committed against wild birds or other specified animals on their land by their employees, contractors and agents.

3. Devices FAQs

Q.  Why do I need to use devices as well as the Trackplot Portal?

A.  You can use the Trackplot Portal as a stand alone solution using the check in/check out facility to check on your lone workers.

However, if the Trackplot Portal is integrated with one of our range of GPS devices then the functionality available to you is widened – you can then locate and monitor each individual lone worker or asset, even in remote regions, in real time.

Q.  Can I use devices without the Trackplot Portal?

A.  Yes, you can but this will simply give you a way of reporting in and out.  You will not be able to locate and monitor each individual lone worker or asset, or track progress over time.

Whatever it is you are monitoring, whether personnel or mobile assets, the Trackplot Portal allows you to analyse the location of these assets and manage them effectively.

Q.  Why should I choose Trackplot as my supplier?

A. We provide advice, tailored to your business, on the most appropriate GPS devices to be integrated with our web based solutions.  This depends on your business, the assets you wish to monitor and why you want to monitor them.
